A server-side pipeline compares each live match against your EPG — reading both the programme titles and the team names from the sport metadata — and pins the channel actually broadcasting the game to the top of the live tab. So even when your EPG just says "Football", the app knows it's the match you want and gives you a one-tap channel chip to start playback. LAN vs 4G/5G
The second screen isn't tied to your home Wi-Fi. On the LAN, your Apple TV exposes a tiny local HTTP server and your iPhone subscribes to a Server-Sent Events stream, giving you sub-second updates. Step out of the house — to the pub, the garden, the train — and CloudKit plus HTTP polling take over so the Live Activity keeps updating on 4G/5G. The iPhone merges the three transports with last-write-wins dedup, so you always see the freshest number available. No operator app, no third-party cloud: just your private Apple iCloud and an anonymous metadata proxy with no accounts, no cookies, no tracking.
What's free vs Pro
Sport Centre browsing is free: live scores, lineups, stats and standings across every supported league, with no account required. The two Pro extras are the ones that make sport ambient rather than something you have to go and check — push notifications (goals, kickoffs, red cards for your teams) and the in-player overlay (the live score above the channel during playback).
